The son of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has taken over as Iran’s supreme leader after his father’s assassination in a US-Israeli attack. Mourners gathered in a mosque in Kano, Nigeria to grieve the late leader. Iran named Mojtaba Khamenei as his father’s replacement, viewed by the community as continuing his father’s resistance. The assassination has deeply affected Nigeria’s Shia Muslim minority, who see themselves connected to Iran’s Shia community. The late Khamenei was revered as a spiritual leader and a champion of oppressed people worldwide. His death comes amidst ongoing US-Israeli attacks on Iran, resulting in significant casualties. Nigerian Shia have protested against the war, demanding an end to the attacks. Ibrahim el-Zakzaky, leader of Nigeria’s Islamic Movement, has played a significant role in expanding the Shia community in the country.
