Palestinian support for Hamas declines as Barghouti enters Abbas succession race

Support for Hamas among Palestinians has significantly declined, dropping from 35% ten months ago to 24%, mirroring support for Fatah, which also stands at 24%. A recent survey by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research indicates a growing distrust in the Palestinian political leadership, with 44% of respondents believing neither Hamas nor Fatah deserves to lead. As legislative elections approach on November 28, support for Fatah among likely voters is at 32%, while Hamas is at 29%, with alternative parties drawing 18%. The decline in Hamas’s support is particularly notable in the West Bank, where it fell to 18%, compared to 33% in Gaza. The survey also reveals a shift in attitudes toward negotiations, with 44% now preferring this method to achieve political goals, compared to 36% previously, while support for armed struggle has decreased from 41% to 27%.

Why It Matters

The decline in support for Hamas reflects broader disillusionment with the Palestinian political system, marking a significant shift in public sentiment. Historical context shows that support for armed resistance has fluctuated in response to political events, particularly in the wake of escalated violence and conflict. The increase in preference for negotiations over armed struggle indicates potential changes in the Palestinian approach to achieving statehood, especially as upcoming elections may offer opportunities for new leadership. This evolving landscape could impact future peace negotiations and the overall stability of the region.
