Iran permits Iraqi tankers to transit Strait of Hormuz under specific regulations

Iran has approved the passage of several Iraqi oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, following persistent requests from Baghdad. This decision came after discussions during Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf’s visit to Iraq, where securing this permission was a top priority for Iraqi officials. Iraqi President Nizar Amedi confirmed that recent arrangements have allowed vessels carrying Iraqi oil to navigate the Strait, and ongoing talks between Iraq and Iran are focused on oil export strategies. However, Amedi noted that the situation remains complex, as Iraq has been significantly impacted by the reduced traffic in the Strait, which is still below pre-war levels and plagued by potential Iranian attacks. Prior to the outbreak of the Iran war, Iraq’s oil production reached around 4 million barrels per day.

Why It Matters

This development is significant as the Strait of Hormuz is a crucial maritime route for global oil transportation, with approximately 20% of the world’s oil passing through it. Iraq has faced challenges in exporting its oil due to geopolitical tensions and security threats in the region. The potential for increased oil exports through this strategic passage could help stabilize Iraq’s economy, especially given its efforts to diversify export routes through Turkey and Syria. Historically, disruptions in this corridor have had wide-ranging implications for global oil prices and regional stability, making the agreement between Iran and Iraq noteworthy in the context of Middle Eastern geopolitics.
