Strait of Hormuz traffic decreases due to blockade

Shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has decreased significantly, with only six commodity vessels transiting the waterway on Tuesday, a drop from nine the previous day and below the 10-day daily average of 11 vessels. This slowdown is attributed to shipowners’ hesitance to enter the key maritime route amidst uncertainty regarding its status following a blockade during the ongoing conflict with Iran. Among the vessels crossing were an empty very large crude carrier and two tankers of varying sizes. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump asserted that the strait remains open, countering Iran’s claims of a continued blockade. The Strait of Hormuz is crucial, as it previously accounted for a significant portion of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas shipments.

Why It Matters

The Strait of Hormuz is vital for international trade, handling about 20% of global oil and gas shipments prior to the conflict. The current reduction in shipping traffic raises concerns about the potential impact on global oil prices and energy security, particularly for countries reliant on Middle Eastern oil. Additionally, the situation underscores the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region, which can disrupt maritime commerce and influence energy markets worldwide. The hesitance of major Chinese shipping companies to navigate these waters further reflects the heightened security risks associated with the conflict.
