Lebanese president to extend UNIFIL mandate amid Hezbollah presence in south

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun affirmed that Lebanon’s primary goal is to extend the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mandate, which is set to expire at the year’s end. During a meeting with a group of 20 lawmakers, Aoun emphasized the necessity of UNIFIL’s presence for stability in southern Lebanon. If the mandate is not renewed, he suggested an alternative framework that would allow for international forces to remain in the region alongside the Lebanese Army. Despite this support, UNIFIL has faced criticism for its inaction regarding Hezbollah’s military presence in southern Lebanon. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam echoed the call for extending UNIFIL’s mandate during discussions with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who acknowledged the importance of maintaining UN operations in the area. Human rights organizations have voiced concerns over the potential withdrawal of UNIFIL, highlighting the risk to civilian safety and human rights.

Why It Matters

The UNIFIL mission was established under Security Council Resolution 1701 in 2006, following the Israel-Hezbollah war, with the goal of supporting the Lebanese Armed Forces in ensuring a demilitarized zone in the south. Over the years, the presence of UNIFIL has been crucial in preventing large-scale conflicts in the region; however, its effectiveness has been questioned due to its inability to curb Hezbollah’s military activities. The potential expiration of UNIFIL’s mandate raises significant concerns for regional stability and the protection of civilians, as many fear that without international oversight, tensions could escalate, leading to greater violence and humanitarian crises in Lebanon.
