Trump reportedly used Kurdish leader Barzani to communicate with Iran’s IRGC

The Trump administration utilized a secret backchannel through Nechirvan Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), to communicate with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC). The discussions began when former national intelligence director Tulsi Gabbard, with President Trump’s approval, reached out to Barzani, asking him to connect with IRGC’s commander, Ahmad Vahidi. Barzani, who has a history in Iran and maintains relationships with IRGC members, successfully contacted Vahidi. During a subsequent phone call, Vahidi expressed support for ongoing negotiations between Iran and the U.S. and indicated a preference for resolving the crisis through dialogue. Although an idea was floated for Barzani to host secret talks in Erbil, concerns over Israeli intelligence activities prevented the meeting from occurring, with Pakistani and Omani mediators continuing the negotiations. Recently, Barzani indicated his willingness to help restart stalled discussions over the Strait of Hormuz.

Why It Matters

The involvement of the KRG in U.S.-Iran communications highlights the complex geopolitical landscape of the Middle East, where local leaders often play critical roles in facilitating dialogue between larger powers. Barzani’s connections and language skills make him a valuable intermediary, reflecting the historical influence of Kurdish leaders in regional diplomacy. The longstanding tensions between Iran and the U.S. over issues like the Strait of Hormuz further complicate negotiations, as both sides seek to navigate security concerns and regional power dynamics. Understanding these interactions is essential for grasping the ongoing challenges in U.S.-Iran relations and their implications for broader regional stability.
