Arab nations criticize Colombia for recognizing Israeli control over Golan Heights

Colombia’s newly inaugurated president, Abelardo de la Espriella, has recognized Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, resulting in a significant diplomatic backlash from several Arab nations. The Colombian Foreign Ministry justified this decision on August 10 by citing ongoing instability in the Middle East and the area’s strategic importance to Israel’s security. This makes Colombia the second UN member state, following the United States, to make such a declaration. Responses from the Arab League, Egypt, Syria, and other nations have been negative, with calls for Colombia to retract its statement, emphasizing that the Golan Heights is considered Syrian territory under international law. Despite the uproar, no immediate diplomatic consequences, such as the recall of ambassadors or economic sanctions, have been reported.

Why It Matters

The recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights by Colombia marks a notable shift in diplomatic relations, particularly given the historical context of the region. The Golan Heights has been a disputed territory since the 1967 Six-Day War, with Syria consistently claiming it as part of its sovereign land. Colombia’s move aligns it more closely with Israel and the U.S., potentially altering its relationships with Arab and Muslim-majority countries that view the annexation as illegal. This decision reflects a broader trend in Latin America, where some nations are reevaluating their foreign policies regarding Israel and Palestine, often in the context of shifting geopolitical alliances and regional conflicts.
