Trump states US will control Hormuz as IDF reports Iran economy suffering from blockade

US President Donald Trump affirmed on Wednesday that the United States maintains control over the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz. In a post on his Truth Social platform, he described the US naval blockade as a “WALL OF STEEL,” asserting that it effectively limits Iran’s military capabilities. Trump went on to criticize Iran, claiming its military forces are weakened and its economy is struggling with severe inflation and lack of resources. Meanwhile, Israeli officials reported that the ongoing US blockade is significantly harming the Iranian economy, particularly affecting its maritime trade and port operations. They predict a potential contraction of 5.6% in Iran’s economy this year, the steepest decline since 1988, which could exacerbate domestic pressures on the Iranian regime.

Why It Matters

The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial waterway for global oil transportation, with about 20% of the world’s oil passing through it. The US naval presence and blockade aim to curb Iranian influence and military activities in the region, particularly in light of ongoing tensions between the US and Iran. Historically, sanctions and blockades have been employed as tools to weaken adversaries economically, which can lead to internal unrest. The deteriorating economic conditions in Iran, marked by soaring inflation and disrupted trade, could further undermine the stability of the Iranian government and its ability to function effectively.
