Iran appoints Rezaee and Zolghadr to senior roles

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei has appointed two prominent figures from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to significant political roles. Mohsen Rezaee, who led the IRGC from 1981 to 1997 and has a history of running in presidential elections, was made Khamenei’s representative on the Supreme National Security Council. Alongside him, Mohammed Bagher Zolghadr, a long-serving IRGC member and former deputy chief, was named Khamenei’s political advisor. Zolghadr recently advocated for increased IRGC control over Iran, reflecting a trend toward consolidating military influence in the country’s governance.

Why It Matters

These appointments underscore the IRGC’s continuing prominence in Iran’s political landscape, particularly under Khamenei’s leadership. The IRGC, established after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, plays a crucial role in Iran’s defense and foreign policy, particularly concerning regional conflicts and national security. Rezaee’s and Zolghadr’s positions may further intertwine military interests with political decision-making, influencing Iran’s approach to both domestic and international issues. This shift could have implications for regional stability, as the IRGC has historically been involved in various proxy conflicts across the Middle East.
