Israel rejects Gaza disarmament deal amid US envoy’s ceasefire push

Late Saturday, Mohammad Dahlan, the former Fatah security chief, claimed on Facebook that U.S. special envoy Jared Kushner had brokered an agreement with Israel to halt its attacks on Gaza the following morning. However, Dahlan later revised the post, removing the specifics about an agreement and stating that Kushner was working towards stopping the strikes. Israeli officials, including Energy Minister Eli Cohen, denied any agreement to cease military operations, asserting that attacks would continue until Israel achieves full control over Gaza. Despite ongoing operations, Dahlan indicated that communication with Washington was still active, and the success of any potential agreement now depended on Israel’s commitment to halt its assaults. As of Sunday, airstrikes resulted in multiple casualties, with reports indicating at least 15 deaths in Gaza.

Why It Matters

The situation in Gaza reflects the complexities of ongoing Israeli-Palestinian relations and the challenges of reaching a lasting ceasefire. Historically, military operations by Israel have been justified as a response to Hamas’ actions, while international negotiations have often failed to produce lasting peace agreements. The proposed roadmap for disarmament and storage of weapons has been contentious, with Hamas asserting control over its arsenal while facing pressure from Israel and its allies. The latest developments underscore the fragile nature of peace talks and the humanitarian crisis that continues to escalate in Gaza.
