UNESCO designates Tyre, Beaufort Castle, and Sebastia as endangered World Heritage sites

Lebanon’s Mount Amel Castles, the ancient Phoenician city of Tyre, and the historic site of Sebastia in Area C of the West Bank were recently classified as World Heritage Sites in Danger by UNESCO during its 48th session in Busan, South Korea. This designation is part of the committee’s annual meeting, which assesses new and existing World Heritage sites for their “outstanding universal value” and their current conservation status. The List of World Heritage Sites in Danger includes sites threatened by serious dangers such as large-scale development, armed conflict, and natural disasters. Currently, there are 58 sites on this list, including the Old City of Jerusalem, which has faced ongoing urban pressures and excavation risks since 1982. This recent designation comes amid increased concerns over the impact of military conflicts on cultural heritage sites in the region.

Why It Matters

The designation of Mount Amel Castles, Tyre, and Sebastia underscores the ongoing threats to cultural heritage in regions affected by conflict. Tyre has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1984 and has faced significant damage due to military operations, particularly since the current war in 2023. The Mount Amel Castles, which have a rich history dating back to the medieval period, are also at risk amidst ongoing tensions in Lebanon. The situation highlights the broader implications of armed conflict on cultural preservation and the urgent need for protective measures for these historical sites, many of which are integral to the identity and heritage of their respective regions.
