US and Saudi Arabia Conduct Strikes on Iraqi PMF Militia Facilities

The United States and Saudi Arabia have escalated tensions with Iran-backed militias in Iraq through joint airstrikes targeting Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) facilities. These strikes were a response to a series of drone and missile attacks on Saudi Arabia, which the U.S. attributes to Iran-aligned militias operating from Iraqi territory. In light of these developments, the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad issued a security alert warning American citizens of increased risks, maintaining a Level 4 “Do Not Travel” advisory for Iraq. Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi faces mounting pressure to assert state control over armed groups, but PMF leaders have shown resistance to disarmament efforts. The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, which includes several Iranian-backed militias, has issued an ultimatum to the Iraqi government, threatening retaliation against U.S. and Saudi interests if action is not taken.

Why It Matters

This situation highlights Iraq’s precarious position amid ongoing regional conflicts. Historically, Iraq has struggled to balance its relationships with both the United States and Iran, particularly as Iranian-backed militias operate independently within its borders. The recent airstrikes and subsequent militia responses could exacerbate tensions, leading to further instability in Iraq and the broader region. The government’s ability to enforce authority over these militias will be crucial, as failure to do so may result in Iraq becoming an arena for conflict between international powers and local factions.
