Commodity ship traffic increases in Bab el-Mandab while remaining low in Hormuz

Thirty-seven commodity ships transited the Bab el-Mandab Strait on Tuesday, marking the highest volume since July 19, according to preliminary shipping data from Kpler. Among the vessels, 20 entered the strait while 17 exited, with no very large crude carriers (VLCC) or liquefied natural gas tankers reported. Of those exiting, three Aframax tankers carried crude oil, including the Aisopos and Gustav, each transporting over 750,000 barrels to the Gulf of Aden, while the Karachi carried approximately 430,000 barrels to Pakistan. Two tankers entered the strait with petrochemical products, including the Velos Aquarius, which carried 345,000 barrels of gasoline blendstock to the west of Suez, and the Sea Ambition, which was bound for Turkey. Meanwhile, Yemen’s Houthis claimed responsibility for missile strikes against a Saudi oil tanker in the Red Sea, intensifying their maritime blockade against Saudi Arabia.

Why It Matters

The Bab el-Mandab Strait is a critical chokepoint for global shipping, especially for oil and gas shipments from the Middle East to Europe and North America. The Houthis’ increasing military actions, including missile strikes on maritime targets, highlight the ongoing instability in the region, which can disrupt global supply chains and impact oil prices. Additionally, the low traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, with only five commodity ships passing, reflects the heightened tensions and security concerns in that area. As geopolitical conflicts continue to evolve, the implications for energy security and international shipping routes remain significant.
