Trump ends ban on direct US flights to Lebanon

President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he is directing his administration to permit all U.S. airline carriers to operate direct flights to Lebanon. This decision follows a meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun. U.S. flights to Lebanon had been suspended since 1985 after the hijacking of TWA Flight 847, which resulted in a 17-day hostage crisis during which a U.S. Navy diver was killed. In a related move, Trump had previously ordered the Transportation Department to lift a ban on U.S. air service to Venezuela earlier this year, which had been in place for seven years until service resumed in April with American Airlines flights from Miami to Caracas. The Federal Aviation Administration and the Transportation Department have not yet provided comments on the new directive regarding Lebanon.

Why It Matters

This announcement marks a significant shift in U.S. aviation policy toward Lebanon, a country that has experienced political instability and security challenges. The suspension of flights since 1985 reflects the historical tensions and incidents involving U.S. nationals in the region. The recent resumption of services to Venezuela and now Lebanon indicates a potential reevaluation of U.S. travel policies in areas previously considered high-risk. This move may also facilitate increased connectivity and economic opportunities between the U.S. and Lebanon, fostering diplomatic relations amidst ongoing geopolitical complexities in the Middle East.
