UN agency reports over 5,330 settler attacks in West Bank since 2023

A United Nations agency released a map detailing alleged extremist Jewish attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank, reporting over 5,330 settler attacks since the beginning of 2023, resulting in casualties and property damage. The report highlights that 64 Palestinians have been killed and 5,173 injured in these incidents, with the Ramallah, Nablus, and Hebron areas being the most affected. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) categorizes all attackers in the West Bank as “settlers” without distinguishing between those living inside the Green Line and those in settlements. In addition to violence, the report states that over 5,900 Palestinians have been displaced due to these attacks and related access restrictions. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) had not provided a response to the report at the time of publication, and there appears to be a significant discrepancy between IDF and UN casualty figures.

Why It Matters

The ongoing violence between Israeli settlers and Palestinians in the West Bank is a significant aspect of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which has seen a complex history of territorial disputes and violence. According to previous reports, the escalation of settler violence has correlated with increased Palestinian attacks, leading to a cycle of retaliation. The UN’s classification of settler attacks highlights the humanitarian implications of the conflict, while the IDF’s differing casualty figures point to the challenges in addressing violence and ensuring security. This situation affects thousands of lives, with extensive displacement and damage to property reported, reflecting the broader instability in the region.
