Tehran employs military measures to assert control over Hormuz

Tehran is reportedly exerting military pressure on Gulf states to assert its control over the strategic Strait of Hormuz, according to the Institute for the Study of War. Recent attacks on Gulf nations are viewed as attempts to undermine Clause 5 of a memorandum of understanding that emphasizes dialogue with Oman and other regional states regarding future maritime governance in the strait, in line with international law. Iranian officials, including Parliamentary National Security and Foreign Policy Commission member Alaeddin Boroujerdi, have stated that commercial vessel traffic in the strait should be managed by Iranian authorities, specifically the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy. Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmail Baghaei affirmed that Iran holds the responsibility for ensuring safe passage for vessels and dismissed allegations that a Qatari vessel was targeted as unfounded, claiming that vessels ignoring Iranian commands disrupt navigation efforts. Analysts argue that the memorandum, designed for de-escalation, has failed to establish a durable peace framework.

Why It Matters

The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial maritime route for global oil shipments, with about 20% of the world’s petroleum passing through it. Tensions in this region have a direct impact on global oil prices and economic stability. The memorandum of understanding aimed to promote dialogue and security among Gulf states but has been criticized for its lack of enforceability and clear guidelines, leading to skepticism among Gulf nations regarding its effectiveness. Iran’s recent military coercion highlights ongoing geopolitical tensions and raises concerns about the stability of oil transport routes, as any conflict in this area could have widespread implications for international energy markets.
