Iranian FM Araghchi warns of halting talks over US threats

He emphasized that Paragraph 13 of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) prohibits the start of negotiations for a final deal as long as threats persist. He urged adherence to the agreement, which outlines commitments from both the United States and Iran, including a ceasefire, the lifting of the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, and the unfreezing of restricted assets. In a recent interview, U.S. President Donald Trump issued a warning to Iran, asserting that they would either reach a deal or face severe consequences. He stated that it would not be difficult to inflict significant damage on Iran’s infrastructure if necessary. Meanwhile, Iranian military officials have indicated that they are on high alert and prepared to respond decisively to any aggression, citing improvements in their operational capabilities during the ceasefire period.

Why It Matters

The ongoing tensions between the U.S. and Iran are rooted in a history of conflict and diplomatic challenges, particularly following the U.S. withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2018. The MoU aims to stabilize the region by addressing critical issues such as sanctions and military actions in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route for global oil. The implications of U.S. threats and Iran’s military readiness highlight the fragile nature of international agreements and the potential for escalation in the region, impacting not only the countries involved but also global security and economic stability.
