Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif is set to attend the funeral of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as confirmed by Pakistan’s foreign ministry. A high-level delegation from Pakistan will accompany him to the state funeral, which is scheduled to take place in Tehran from July 4 to July 9, culminating in Khamenei’s burial in Mashhad. Other notable attendees include Chinese lawmaker He Wei and former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev, who will represent President Vladimir Putin. India will be represented by Deputy Foreign Minister Pabitra Margherita and Bihar Governor Syed Ata Hasnain. Iranian officials expect attendees from over 30 countries, including Tajikistan, and religious leaders from over 90 nations. During the funeral, Iran’s Parliament Speaker called for unity among the Iranian people and expressed a demand for justice following the leader’s passing.

Why It Matters

The attendance of international dignitaries at Khamenei’s funeral highlights the significant geopolitical relationships in the region, particularly between Iran and its neighboring countries. Khamenei, who led Iran for over three decades, shaped the country’s foreign and domestic policies, influencing its role in Middle Eastern politics. His death may impact regional alliances and tensions, as well as internal political dynamics within Iran, given the historical context of leadership transitions in the Islamic Republic. The high-profile representation at the funeral underscores the importance of Iran within the broader geopolitical landscape, especially concerning its relationships with Pakistan, China, and Russia.
