Iran seeks to expand control over Hormuz Strait

The Islamic Republic of Iran has announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, outlining terms through the Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA), indicating its intent to assert control over this critical waterway. Despite U.S. Central Command claiming the strait remains open, data from Kpler shows a significant decline in maritime traffic following Iran’s announcement, which was made in response to Israeli military actions in Lebanon. On a recent day, only 32 vessels transited the strait, a stark contrast to the 55 reported by CENTCOM. Additionally, reports reveal that Iran has been operating sanctioned vessels openly, signaling a shift in operational tactics. The PGSA has stated that ships must obtain permission to cross and disclose their cargo details, raising concerns about the legality of these demands under international law, specifically the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which guarantees unimpeded transit even during conflicts.

Why It Matters

The Strait of Hormuz is a vital corridor for global oil transport, with approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas passing through it. Iran’s attempts to impose regulations and fees on maritime traffic could disrupt global energy supplies, particularly as tensions in the region escalate. Historical patterns show that Iran has previously threatened shipping security through military actions, including mine placements. The current geopolitical climate, characterized by U.S.-Iran tensions and regional conflicts, heightens the risk of further escalations affecting international shipping and energy markets, making the situation in Hormuz critical for global economic stability.
