Turkey’s National Intelligence Organization, in coordination with Syrian intelligence, has apprehended ten ISIS terrorists who were subjects of an Interpol Red Notice. The suspects were captured during a cross-border operation and brought to Turkey for interrogation, with nine of them formally arrested and one suspect’s detention extended. Among those arrested is Omer Deniz Dundar, a significant figure linked to the 2015 Ankara train station bombing that resulted in 109 fatalities. Another key individual is Ali Bora, an ISIS intelligence emir involved in planning attacks against Turkish military targets. Other detainees include members responsible for medical and propaganda operations within ISIS, as well as operatives who conducted mortar attacks against the Syrian army. The captured individuals have provided information about their training and the operations they were involved in.

Why It Matters

The capture of these ISIS operatives marks a significant development in Turkey’s ongoing efforts to combat terrorism, particularly from the remnants of the group that has been active in the region since the Syrian civil war began in 2011. The 2015 Ankara bombing highlighted the threat posed by ISIS, which has claimed numerous lives and instigated widespread fear in Turkey. The apprehension of these key figures may provide critical insights into ISIS’s operational strategies and future threats. Turkey has been actively targeting ISIS networks, reflecting its focus on national security amid the broader geopolitical tensions in the region.
