Mural Commemorates Iranian Children Lost in Unrest and Druze Children

A mural honoring children killed in violence in Iran will be unveiled in Israel, featuring a symbolic children’s football match. The mural, created by artist Hooman Khalili, depicts Druze children in green, representing 12 victims of a Hezbollah rocket attack in July 2024, alongside children in red, symbolizing minors killed in Iran since September 2022. The scene is overseen by Zahra Azadpour, a young female footballer killed during unrest in Iran in January 2026. The installation incorporates significant cultural imagery, including Jethro’s Tomb and Tehran’s Azadi Tower, and features the names of the deceased children from both regions. Khalili expressed a desire to install a similar mural in the U.S. before the FIFA World Cup to raise awareness of the violence faced by children in Iran.

Why It Matters

This mural serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing violence affecting children in Iran, where Amnesty International has reported that security forces have used lethal methods against minors during protests. The project highlights the historical context of unrest in Iran, particularly since the protests that began in September 2022, which have seen numerous children among the casualties. By drawing attention to these tragedies through art, the mural aims to foster a global dialogue about human rights and the impact of conflict on vulnerable populations.
