Kurdistan Region anticipates stability from new Iraq Prime Minister

Iraq has appointed a new prime minister, Ali al-Zaidi, after nearly six months of political deadlock following the November 2025 elections. The Shi’ite political parties, which hold the majority in the country, selected Zaidi in line with the sectarian power-sharing system that also allocates the presidency to the Kurds. The autonomous Kurdistan Region is particularly hopeful that Zaidi’s leadership will restore stability, as it has faced approximately 800 drone and missile attacks linked to Iranian-backed militias since the recent U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran. In his initial meetings with Kurdish leaders, including Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, Zaidi emphasized the need for a unified approach to forming a government capable of addressing Iraq’s challenges and securing the aspirations of its people.

Why It Matters

The appointment of a new prime minister in Iraq is significant as it highlights the ongoing struggle for political stability in a country plagued by sectarian divisions and external influences, particularly from Iran. The Iranian-backed militias, which are integrated into the Iraqi state as the Popular Mobilization Forces, pose a dual threat to governance and security. This complexity is compounded by historical tensions between the Kurdish Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), which affects political dynamics in the Kurdistan Region. The response of the new government to these challenges will be crucial for Iraq’s stability and its relations with both regional and international powers.
