Geagea accuses Hezbollah of causing violence and displacement in Lebanon

Geagea stated that Hezbollah’s presence and armament are central to the need for a ceasefire in Lebanon, emphasizing that the group’s actions have contributed to ongoing issues such as prisoner detainment, displacement, and the necessity for reconstruction. He further claimed that Hezbollah is responsible for the Israeli occupation of Lebanon. In contrast, Hezbollah’s Secretary-General, Naim Qassem, outlined the organization’s conditions for a ceasefire with Israel, which include a permanent halt to hostilities, Israel’s complete withdrawal from Lebanese territory, the release of prisoners, the safe return of displaced residents, and the initiation of reconstruction efforts supported by the international community. Qassem also expressed Hezbollah’s willingness to cooperate with the Lebanese government in establishing a new framework for national sovereignty.

Why It Matters

The ongoing conflict between Hezbollah and Israel has long-standing implications for regional stability in the Middle East. Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran, has engaged in numerous confrontations with Israel since its emergence in the 1980s, contributing to cycles of violence and humanitarian crises in Lebanon. The situation is further complicated by the presence of displaced populations and political tensions within Lebanon, which have roots in both historical grievances and contemporary geopolitical struggles involving various state and non-state actors. Understanding the dynamics of this conflict is crucial for assessing potential pathways toward peace and reconstruction in the region.
