Ghalibaf: Iran-US talks indicate deeper understanding but lack trust

The ongoing negotiations between Iran and the United States have not alleviated the deep-seated mistrust between the two nations, yet they have enhanced mutual understanding, according to Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf. Key points of contention in the discussions included issues related to the Strait of Hormuz and nuclear policies. Ghalibaf reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to maintaining traffic in the strategic waterway, stating that any disruption was linked to the lack of a full ceasefire in Lebanon. He also emphasized that Iran would not tolerate a situation where foreign vessels could navigate the strait while Iranian ships could not. Ghalibaf described the military situation as a victory for Iran despite acknowledging the US’s superior military resources, arguing that Iran’s strategic preparedness has led to prolonged conflict and forced the US to seek a ceasefire. Additionally, he highlighted that any ceasefire must also include Lebanon, as Hezbollah had become a significant player in the regional conflict.

Why It Matters

The tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz are critical due to its significance as a vital shipping route for global oil supplies. Control over this area has historically been a flashpoint for military confrontations and geopolitical disputes. The ongoing conflict and negotiations reflect broader issues of regional security, particularly involving Iran’s nuclear capabilities and its influence in the Middle East. The inclusion of Lebanon and Hezbollah in ceasefire discussions underscores the interconnectedness of regional conflicts and the complexities of achieving peace in an area marked by longstanding rivalries and alliances.
