Iranian Foreign Ministry criticizes EU on international law compliance

Esmaeil Baghaei, the Head of Iran’s Center for Public Diplomacy and a spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry, criticized the European Union for alleged hypocrisy regarding claims of Iran violating international law. His remarks were in response to a tweet from Kaja Kallas, Vice-President of the European Commission, asserting that the Strait of Hormuz must remain open and free for transit under international law. Baghaei dismissed such statements, arguing that Europe fails to adhere to its own principles and that international law permits Iran to take necessary defensive actions in the strait. He also contended that the presence of U.S. and Israeli military assets undermines the notion of “unconditional transit passage.” Furthermore, over 100 international law experts from U.S. institutions raised concerns about potential violations of international law by U.S. forces, particularly highlighting comments from U.S. officials that could indicate reckless military conduct.

Why It Matters

This exchange underscores heightened tensions in the Middle East, particularly concerning the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime route for global oil shipments. The strait has been a focal point of military and political conflict, especially given its proximity to U.S. and Israeli military presence, which Iran perceives as a threat. The concerns raised by international law experts reflect ongoing debates about the legality of military actions and their humanitarian implications, especially in light of past conflicts involving Iran and U.S. forces. Understanding the dynamics of these international relations and legal arguments is crucial as they could influence regional stability and global energy markets.
