WHO halts medical evacuations from Gaza after contractor’s death

The World Health Organization (WHO) has suspended medical evacuations from Gaza following the killing of a contracted individual during a security incident, as announced by Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. While two WHO staff members were in proximity to the event, they were unharmed. The details surrounding the incident have not been disclosed, but an investigation is underway by the appropriate authorities. Medical evacuations through the Rafah crossing had previously been halted from March 23 to March 25 due to unsafe conditions, and Rafah currently serves as the sole route for medical assistance for those in Gaza. As of March 27, thousands of patients remain in urgent need of evacuation.

Why It Matters

The ongoing conflict in Gaza has made access to medical care increasingly perilous, with the Rafah crossing being the only escape route for patients needing treatment. The suspension of evacuations due to security incidents highlights the challenging environment humanitarian organizations face while trying to provide aid. Prior suspensions of medical evacuations indicate a pattern of instability that continues to leave vulnerable populations without essential services. The situation remains critical as many patients await urgent medical assistance amid escalating violence and deteriorating living conditions.
