Iran to Keep Strait of Hormuz Closed Until War Damage Compensation is Received

The Iranian navy has declared that the Strait of Hormuz will not revert to its previous state following recent conflicts. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy is reportedly preparing for a “new order in the Persian Gulf,” which will have lasting implications, especially for the United States and Israel. In response to threats from former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the strait’s accessibility, Iranian officials stated that it would only reopen once reparations for war damages are addressed, implying that transit toll revenues may be involved. Meanwhile, Iraq’s state oil marketer, SOMO, has requested crude oil lifting schedules from its customers within 24 hours, indicating that Iran has lifted restrictions on Iraqi oil transit through the strait. SOMO confirmed that all loading terminals remain operational, but concerns linger about the willingness of shipowners to operate in the current conflict zone.

Why It Matters

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical maritime chokepoint for global oil shipments, with approximately 20% of the world’s oil passing through it. The ongoing U.S.-Iran tensions, particularly following military actions and political rhetoric, have heightened risks for shipping in the region. Iraq, as a significant oil producer, relies heavily on this strait for exports, and any disruptions could affect global oil prices. The situation remains precarious as geopolitical dynamics evolve, influencing trade routes and energy security in the region.
