IRGC issues threats to US and Israel-linked universities

The Iranian regime has issued threats against academic institutions associated with the United States and Israel throughout the Middle East, labeling them as “legitimate targets.” This announcement follows recent strikes on Isfahan University of Technology and Iran University of Science and Technology, which Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) criticized what it called “invading American-Zionist forces” for their attacks on Iranian universities and warned that universities linked to the U.S. and Israel would now be targets. The IRGC urged American university employees and students in the region to maintain a distance of at least one kilometer from these institutions for their safety. In response, the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad has warned American citizens and universities in Iraq of potential threats from Iran and its proxies, advising them to evacuate the country immediately.

Why It Matters

The threats from Iran come amid escalating tensions between Iran and the U.S., particularly following recent military actions attributed to U.S. forces in the region. Historically, Iran has viewed U.S. and Israeli presence in the Middle East as a direct threat to its sovereignty and has frequently used rhetoric around targeting foreign interests to galvanize domestic support. The U.S. has established several universities across the region, which may be perceived as symbols of American influence, thus making them vulnerable to Iranian hostility. Additionally, the prevalence of Iranian-backed militias in Iraq raises concerns about security for American citizens and institutions, highlighting the ongoing instability in the region.
