IRGC issues threats to universities in the Middle East

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has declared its intention to target American and Israeli universities in the Middle East in retaliation for a reported attack on the Iran University of Science and Technology in Tehran. The IRGC’s statement warned that these institutions would be considered legitimate targets until two Iranian universities receive equivalent strikes. The group also urged staff, students, and civilians to remain at least one kilometer away from these sites for their safety. Additionally, the IRGC has issued an ultimatum to the U.S. government, demanding an official condemnation of the attack on Iranian universities by Monday. The IRGC has further suggested that any military action against Iranian educational institutions must cease to avoid potential retaliation.

Why It Matters

This escalation highlights the ongoing tensions between Iran and the U.S., particularly regarding military actions in the region. The IRGC’s threats reflect a broader strategy of using civilian locations, such as schools and hospitals, as shields against attacks, which complicates military engagement and raises concerns about civilian safety. Historical conflicts between Iran and Israel, as well as U.S. involvement in Middle Eastern affairs, continue to influence the dynamics of regional security and international relations. The IRGC’s statements may indicate a shift in tactics in response to perceived threats, emphasizing the volatility in the region and the potential for further conflict.
