Marco Rubio speaks with Iraqi Kurdish leader, according to State Department

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a conversation with Masrour Barzani, the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), on Thursday. During this discussion, Rubio expressed appreciation for the KRG’s role in facilitating Iraqi oil exports, including those from the Kurdistan region, to international markets. In light of recent tensions, Rubio also offered condolences to the families of six Peshmerga fighters who lost their lives in an Iranian missile attack on March 24 and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. This attack involved six Iranian ballistic missiles striking a Peshmerga military base north of Erbil, resulting in significant casualties among the Kurdish forces. The ongoing conflict in Iran has led to rising oil prices and instability in global markets.

Why It Matters

The connection between the US, the Kurdistan Regional Government, and the broader geopolitical tensions in the region is crucial. The Iran war, which began on February 28 with US and Israeli strikes, has escalated into a broader conflict impacting oil prices and security across the Middle East. The KRG’s ability to export oil is significant not only for Iraq’s economy but also for global energy markets, especially in the context of fluctuating prices caused by regional conflicts. Furthermore, the attacks on Peshmerga forces highlight the volatility and dangers faced by Kurdish fighters, who play an essential role in regional security dynamics.
