Philippe Lazzarini discusses UNRWA’s future and funding

The future role of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) remains uncertain, according to its chief, Philippe Lazzarini, who cautioned that eliminating the agency without a replacement could lead to a crisis similar to Iraq post-2003. The U.S. halted its funding for UNRWA in January 2024 after allegations of staff involvement in a Hamas attack. Lazzarini emphasized the need for Gulf Arab countries to boost their support for Palestinian refugees. Meanwhile, Israel’s parliament passed a law barring UNRWA’s operations in the country.
