US takes first steps that ease sanctions on Syria

The Trump administration announced the effective lifting of sanctions on Syria, with the Treasury Department issuing General License 25, which allows transactions with Syria’s interim government led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa and related entities. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also provided a 180-day waiver under the Caesar Act to facilitate humanitarian efforts and investments, emphasizing the U.S.’s new approach towards Syria following Trump’s meeting with Sharaa. Sanctions, initially imposed on Bashar al-Assad’s government in 2011, are aimed at promoting stability and rebuilding efforts in Syria.
