Senator Darline Graham advances to GOP Senate primary runoff

Appointed Senator Darline Graham is set to compete in a Republican primary runoff for a full Senate term in South Carolina, though her opponent remains undecided. The runoff could potentially see GOP voters rejecting a candidate endorsed by former President Donald Trump. Graham, who was appointed by Governor Henry McMaster in July to fill the remainder of her late brother Lindsey Graham’s term, aims to secure her position on the November ballot for a full six-year term. In a special primary featuring ten candidates, Graham led with about 33% of the vote, while Reps. Russell Fry and Ralph Norman were close behind, each garnering approximately 23%. The winner of the runoff on August 25 will face Democrat Annie Andrews, who won her party’s primary in June. Graham, the first woman to represent South Carolina in the Senate, has never held elected office but performed well across most counties in the primary.

Why It Matters

The outcome of the upcoming runoff is significant as it may reflect the influence of Trump’s endorsement within the GOP, especially given previous instances where candidates endorsed by him were rejected by voters. Historically, South Carolina has been a vital state for presidential candidates, and its primaries often set the tone for upcoming elections. The dynamics of this race could also impact broader Republican strategies heading into the November elections, particularly regarding candidate selection and voter alignment. Graham’s unique position as the first woman in South Carolina’s Senate may also influence voter perceptions and engagement.
