Apple to pay $250 million to iPhone owners over Siri issues

Apple has reached a $250 million settlement to resolve a class action lawsuit that alleged the company misled customers regarding the availability of its Apple Intelligence features. This settlement specifically applies to U.S. consumers who purchased the iPhone 16 and iPhone 15 Pro models between June 10, 2024, and March 29, 2025. The lawsuit, filed in 2025, claimed that Apple’s marketing created a reasonable expectation that the Apple Intelligence features would be fully available at the launch of the iPhone 16, but they were provided weeks later and were limited in functionality. Following the lawsuit, the National Advertising Division recommended that Apple alter its marketing claims, which led to Apple removing an advertisement featuring actor Bella Ramsey that showcased the AI-enhanced Siri.

Why It Matters

This lawsuit highlights ongoing consumer concerns regarding transparency in technology advertising, particularly around artificial intelligence and its capabilities. As companies like Apple continue to innovate and expand their AI functionalities, accurate marketing claims become crucial to maintain consumer trust. Previous cases of misleading advertising in the tech industry have led to regulatory scrutiny and legal action, emphasizing the importance of clear communication about product features and their availability at launch. The resolution of this lawsuit may influence how tech companies approach advertising for future products, particularly as the competitive landscape intensifies in the AI sector.
