Apple discontinues the Mac Pro

Apple has officially discontinued the Mac Pro, a high-end desktop computer that was last updated in 2023. The Mac Pro, known for its unique cheese-grater design and Intel chips, has been removed from Apple’s website and storefront, indicating its withdrawal from the product lineup. Originally launched in 2019 to meet the demands of professional users, the Mac Pro was updated to include Apple’s M2 Ultra chip, though its design remained unchanged. The Mac Studio, introduced in 2022, has since emerged as Apple’s new flagship professional computer, benefiting from continuous updates while the Mac Pro remained stagnant. Reports had already suggested a planned retirement for the Mac Pro by November 2025, making its discontinuation unsurprising.

Why It Matters

The discontinuation of the Mac Pro marks a significant shift in Apple’s approach to professional computing. The original Mac Pro was introduced in response to professional users’ needs for powerful performance, but the transition to Apple’s proprietary M-series chips signaled a new era for Mac computers. The Mac Studio has effectively taken the lead as the ideal machine for creatives and professionals, showcasing Apple’s commitment to performance and efficiency. This change reflects broader trends in the tech industry where companies increasingly prioritize custom hardware solutions to enhance user experience and capabilities.
