Anthropic suspends Mythos and Fable access after US order

Anthropic announced on Friday that it will “abruptly disable” its advanced AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, for all users following a government order restricting access for foreign nationals due to national security concerns. The company stated that this measure applies universally to foreign nationals, including those working for Anthropic in the U.S. The directive, received shortly before the announcement, cited a potential method for bypassing the models, although Anthropic contends that the reported issue is minor and widely present in other AI systems. As a result, Anthropic will ensure compliance by suspending access to these models while continuing to provide other AI services. The order raises questions about the implications for non-American users, including foreign employees of the company.

Why It Matters

This situation illustrates the increasing scrutiny and regulatory oversight that AI technology is facing in the U.S. The government’s demand for compliance highlights the balance between national security interests and the development and deployment of advanced AI systems. The potential for restricting access based on nationality could have significant implications for global collaboration in AI research and development. It also underscores the tensions between innovation in the tech sector and regulatory frameworks aimed at mitigating risks associated with rapidly advancing technologies.
