Albanese Drops Hate Speech Criminalization Plan After Greens Withdraw Support
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has abandoned plans to criminalise hate speech after it became clear that his proposed racial vilification laws would not gain support in the Federal Parliament. Following the Greens’ decision to back new gun laws but oppose hate speech proposals, Albanese announced the separation of the omnibus bill into two, eliminating provisions for hate speech criminalisation. The Federal Government will now focus on a national gun buyback scheme after a recent terror attack, amid criticism from the opposition regarding the legislative process.
