Labour mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham has opposed plans to raise the bus fare cap by 50 per cent, opting to keep the cost of a bus journey capped at £2 in the city. This decision contrasts with Sir Keir Starmer’s announcement of a £3 maximum bus fare in England until the end of 2025 to address public finances. Burnham stated that Greater Manchester will implement a new fare structure with a £2 single fare in January, noting the region’s different position in bus funding and fares compared to other areas in England.
