What You Need to Know
• Pyrotecnico, led by CEO Stephen Vitale, plans to launch over 850,000 fireworks on July Fourth in Washington, D.C.
• The 40-minute display will be launched from eight barges and two land-based sites along the Potomac River.
• Designer Jason Farrell sourced fireworks from Spain, Italy, and China for the grand finale of the event.

On July Fourth, 2023, Stephen Vitale, the CEO of Pyrotecnico, announced that the company will launch more than 850,000 fireworks in Washington, D.C., aiming to break a world record set by a megachurch in the Philippines a decade ago. The 40-minute display will be executed from eight barges on the Potomac River and two land-based locations, including West Potomac Park and the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Approximately 58,000 pounds of fireworks have been transported from western Pennsylvania to the capital, where a team of 75 Pyrotecnico employees will oversee the event. The finale will feature fireworks from Spain, Italy, and China, synchronized to a live soundtrack performed by a military band.

Why It Matters

This event is significant as it represents a culmination of over a century of tradition in fireworks displays, originating from the family business established by Constantine Vitale in Italy in 1889. Pyrotecnico has evolved into a prominent fireworks company, providing shows for major events and artists across the United States. The planned display not only aims to set a new world record but also highlights the cultural importance of Independence Day celebrations in the U.S., showcasing international collaboration in fireworks design and execution.
