Amazon Luna discontinues support for purchased games and third-party subscriptions

Amazon’s Luna cloud gaming service is undergoing significant changes, ceasing support for Ubisoft+ and Jackbox Games subscriptions, as well as standalone game purchases. Customers with active subscriptions through Luna will see them automatically canceled at the end of their next billing cycle. While Ubisoft+ subscriptions purchased directly from Ubisoft will still grant access to games on Luna until June 10, the “Bring Your Own Library” feature, which allowed users to play games from third-party platforms like EA and GOG, will be discontinued on June 3. Users who bought games outright on Luna can still play them until June 10, but Amazon is not offering refunds for these purchases. This move is part of a broader shift for Luna, which has struggled since its 2020 launch, with plans to focus more on casual games and a tiered subscription model similar to Game Pass.

Why It Matters

This shift reflects the ongoing challenges faced by cloud gaming services, which have struggled to gain traction in a competitive market dominated by established gaming platforms. Amazon Luna, launched as a competitor to Google Stadia, has not achieved significant user adoption, prompting the company to pivot its strategy. By discontinuing specific features and subscriptions, Amazon is realigning Luna’s offerings to focus on casual gaming experiences. This decision underscores the complexities of digital game ownership and the risks associated with purchasing games through subscription services, highlighting the importance of platform stability for consumers.
