Chinese retailer AliExpress has been found to use a tracking method known as browser fingerprinting, which involves sending inaudible sounds to users’ browsers. This discovery was made by researcher Matthew Callaghan when he noticed that audio from his Bluetooth headphones stopped while browsing the AliExpress homepage. His headphones, designed to connect to multiple devices, would resume normal operation once the AliExpress tab was closed. Upon investigation, Callaghan identified two complex scripts that generated a graph analyzing the WebAudio readings of each visiting browser, effectively employing audio output to track users without their consent.
