Algeria’s president proposes death penalty for arsonists causing forest fires

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has proposed the death penalty for individuals who intentionally start forest fires, following recent wildfires that claimed 12 lives and injured 54 in northeastern Algeria. He instructed the justice minister to draft amendments to the penal code by September 15. The president also called for swift restoration of essential services in affected areas and compensation for victims’ families, as investigations into the fires reveal potential deliberate actions.
