This week, IndyCar introduced its new chassis, the IR-28, ahead of its 2028 debut. Alexander Rossi of Ed Carpenter Racing was the first to test the car during a two-day session at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where he praised the preparation for the shakedown despite limited track time due to weather conditions. Rossi described the launch as the smoothest he has experienced, highlighting the anticipation from drivers, fans, and teams alike. The IR-28 is notable for being the first chassis designed with the Aeroscreen and hybrid systems in mind, and it is expected to weigh approximately 100 pounds less than the current DW12 chassis, which has been in use since 2012. Reigning champion Alex Palou will be the next driver to test the new chassis.

Why It Matters

The introduction of the IR-28 marks a significant advancement in IndyCar technology, as it is the first new chassis since the DW12 debuted over a decade ago. The development reflects IndyCar’s commitment to innovation, particularly with the integration of hybrid systems and enhanced safety features like the Aeroscreen. The IR-28’s lighter weight could improve performance and fuel efficiency, aligning with trends in motorsport toward sustainability. This chassis is anticipated to influence the competitive landscape in the upcoming seasons, especially as teams adapt to its capabilities and features.
