Àlex Palou secured the 2026 NTT IndyCar Series championship during a unique doubleheader weekend in Milwaukee. The 29-year-old Spaniard faced an engine penalty in the first race, which began on Saturday but was interrupted by rain, postponing its conclusion until Sunday. The unusual schedule had the second race starting at noon, where Palou finished fifth, while Pato O’Ward claimed victory. To clinch the title, Palou needed to maintain a lead of over 54 points, which he achieved by finishing tenth in the resumed first race later that day. This victory marks Palou’s fifth championship win in six years and fourth consecutive title, placing him third on the all-time list for IndyCar championships, behind legends AJ Foyt and Scott Dixon.

Why It Matters

Palou’s achievement underscores his dominance in the IndyCar Series, as he has now won five championships in just six seasons, showcasing his consistency and skill. This accomplishment places him among the all-time greats in the sport, with only AJ Foyt’s seven and Scott Dixon’s six championships ahead of him. The significance of Palou’s performance is highlighted by his ability to maintain composure under pressure during the unusual race circumstances. As the season concludes at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, Palou’s strong track record at this venue could further solidify his legacy in the sport.
