A JetBlue pilot landing at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport reported a near-collision incident on Monday night. At approximately 6:15 p.m., the pilot informed air traffic control that a smaller plane was flying erratically in the vicinity. Audio recordings revealed the JetBlue flight was only a mile away from the other aircraft and a few hundred feet apart in altitude. The air traffic controller referred to the erratic plane’s pilot as “Mad Max,” indicating their reckless flying behavior. Fortunately, the required separation for safe flight was maintained, and both the JetBlue flight and another JetBlue aircraft were able to land safely. The second plane was not in communication with air traffic control, and the FAA is currently investigating the incident.
Why It Matters
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about air traffic safety, particularly involving smaller aircraft operating near busy commercial airports. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is the 18th-busiest airport in the U.S., and incidents of close calls in aviation have increased in recent weeks. Previous close calls have involved various airlines and different types of aircraft, prompting investigations by the FAA. Ensuring that all pilots maintain communication with air traffic control is crucial for safe operations, especially in crowded airspace where the potential for accidents can escalate rapidly.
