A flight attendant aboard an Air Canada jet that collided with a Port Authority fire truck on the runway at LaGuardia Airport has been found alive, still strapped into her jump seat. The incident occurred during the evening of March 22, 2026, when the CRJ-900 aircraft struck the fire truck that had been cleared to cross the runway for an emergency response. Tragically, both the pilot and co-pilot were killed, and 39 of the 72 passengers were hospitalized, with nine in critical condition. The flight attendant, although injured, is expected to survive, while two crew members from the fire truck sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Air Canada Jazz expressed condolences for the loss of the pilots and support for the injured passengers as investigations are underway, led by the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board and supported by Canada’s Transportation Safety Board.

Why It Matters

This incident is significant as it underscores the critical safety concerns surrounding airport operations and emergency vehicle protocols. Previous accidents at airports involving aircraft and ground vehicles have led to heightened scrutiny of safety measures, prompting regulatory bodies to enforce stricter guidelines. With airports experiencing increased traffic, understanding the circumstances surrounding this crash may lead to improved safety protocols and prevent similar incidents in the future. The investigation’s findings will be crucial for aviation safety, potentially influencing policy adjustments in both the U.S. and Canada.
