Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia is leaving for London for medical treatment after being sentenced to jail under Sheikh Hasina’s rule; an interim government led by Muhammad Yunus is in power, planning elections for either December 2025 or the first half of next year. Zia’s departure comes amid political uncertainty following Hasina’s ousting in August, with her son Tarique Rahman expected to lead Zia’s party in the upcoming election, as her supporters claim the charges against her were politically motivated and demand reforms before the election.
