What You Need to Know
• Women accounted for only 26% of hires in AI jobs in the U.S., according to LinkedIn research.
• The average salary for AI roles is approximately $177,000, compared to $80,000 for non-AI positions.
• Women hold just 13% of leadership roles in AI firms globally, significantly lower than their 20% representation in tech overall.

LinkedIn research indicates that the artificial intelligence jobs boom is widening the gender gap in the technology sector, with women making up only 26% of new hires for AI positions in the United States. This contrasts sharply with the 50% of women hired for non-AI roles. The rising demand for AI skills has led to a doubling of job postings since 2023, with average salaries for AI jobs reaching about $177,000, compared to roughly $80,000 for non-AI roles. LinkedIn spokeswoman Sarah Steinberg highlighted that women are underrepresented in AI, facing compounded barriers in an industry where they hold only 13% of leadership roles across 27 countries.

Why It Matters

The underrepresentation of women in AI roles is significant as it reflects broader issues within the technology industry. Historically, women have been more likely to occupy positions vulnerable to automation, such as administrative roles, with 86% of the 6.1 million affected workers being women. This trend raises concerns about economic equity, as women are not only at risk of job displacement but are also missing out on the lucrative opportunities presented by the AI sector. Addressing this imbalance is crucial for fostering a more inclusive workforce in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
