Gadget prices decline over decades, impacted by AI advancements

After decades of declining prices, consumer electronics are experiencing a price surge due to a global shortage of memory and storage chips driven by the artificial intelligence boom. Major companies like Apple and Microsoft have announced price increases for core products, including iPads, MacBooks, and Xbox consoles, as demand for chips for AI applications has surged. Analysts suggest that upcoming iPhone price hikes could reach up to $200 for Pro models. Historically, prices for personal electronics have generally decreased, but recent data shows a notable rise in costs, with computer software and accessories up over 14% year-on-year. The chip shortage is exacerbated by tech giants, referred to as “hyperscalers,” buying up chip production capacity at premium prices, leaving fewer chips for consumer devices.

Why It Matters

The current chip shortage, which is characterized as more severe than pandemic-related disruptions, has significant implications for the consumer electronics market. The three largest memory chip manufacturers—Micron Technology, Samsung Electronics, and SK Hynix—are prioritizing high bandwidth memory (HBM) production to meet the needs of data centers for AI, resulting in reduced supply for traditional consumer devices. As demand for memory chips from tech giants continues to outpace supply, prices are expected to rise further, with estimates suggesting potential increases of 17% for PCs and 13% for smartphones by 2025. This prolonged shortage could lead consumers to retain their devices longer, impacting overall sales in the electronics market.
