Aguia approaches government approval amid rising Brazilian phosphate demand

Aguia Resources has addressed final requests from Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul environmental agency, FEPAM, concerning its phosphate installation licence. The company is now awaiting approval to commence mining operations at its Três Estradas project and processing at the Dagoberto Barcelos plant. Aguia submitted its responses to FEPAM on May 4 and expects a decision within three weeks. The company recently launched its Pampafos natural phosphate fertiliser and has completed several key pre-start tasks, including electrical works and the installation of a weighbridge module. Subject to final approvals, operational testing is set to begin soon, coinciding with increased demand for locally sourced fertiliser as the planting season approaches.

Why It Matters

Aguia Resources’ progress towards obtaining an operating licence is significant as it highlights the increasing demand for locally sourced phosphate fertilisers in Brazil. The company has already secured non-binding agreements for 40,000 tonnes of its Pampafos product, representing over 70% of its projected output for 2026. The context of limited availability of imported phosphate at the Port of Rio Grande further emphasizes the importance of Aguia’s operations. As southern Brazilian farmers prepare for the next planting cycle, the timely launch of Aguia’s production could address local agricultural needs and contribute to regional economic stability.
